A former Weight Watcher's leader, I do know how to lose weight. However, I have the same struggles many women face every year with winter weight gain. And I find myself in the same predicament every spring -- with 8-10 pounds to lose.

Even with 2x week boot camp and 3x week spin classes begun in January, I am still 7 pounds over the top of the range of a healthy BMI for my height. I know that being overweight increases my risks for diabetes and heart disease, both of which run in my family. And almost as harmful to my health, according to some studies, is the annual "yo-yo'ing".

This spring into summer, my goal is to lose weight and keep it off through the winter.

Managing Menopause Boils Down to Eating Right & (Not) Smoking?

Posted on May 13, 2013 at 4:30pm 0 Comments

I am probably 2 years from Menopause. My Mom was 50 at onset and I am 48. I'm starting to see the disruption in what was a very regular menstrual cycle (my gyno has ruled out other reasons) and sleep cycle. So I'm very interested in lifestyle tips.

Does anyone have tips to offer?

Womenshealth.gov offers these recommendations to help minimize menopausal symptoms:

  • Eat a balanced, nutritious diet, making an effort to limit caffeine and alcohol.
  • Quit…

Hidden Lactose in Your Food

Posted on May 9, 2013 at 10:53am 0 Comments

I have schooled myself to look for hidden sugar, and now comes this news about hidden lactose...

Lactose is an enzyme that is typically found in milk and other dairy foods. It's also added to many non-dairy products, which is bad news for people who can't digest the enzyme properly. The condition is known as lactose intolerance.

The American College of Gastroenterology says foods that may be harboring lactose include:

Baked goods, including breads and processed breakfast…

Fitness Fact or Fiction

The American Council on Exercise has debunked some common myths about exercise. Which surprises you the most? For me, it's the muscle weighs more than fat, fiction. I hear that all the time! Don't you?

Myth #1: Stretching before exercise reduces the risk of injury. – False

The scientific literature of the past decade fails to support stretching before exercise as a successful strategy for injury prevention. However, research does support stretching at other times,…

Can Sugar Make You Dumb?

A new study in the Journal of Physiology suggests that it just may. But a diet rich in omega-3s may help counter the effects.

Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) tested rats on the Barnes maze both before and after feeding them a diet of fructose in their water. Some of the rats also received omega-3s in their mix. After six weeks, the rats who were not ingesting omega-3s as part of the diet showed significant memory loss and impaired abilities.…
