They Found What!? in Breastmilk?

I recently heard this story about breast development affected by environmental toxins and was subsequently terrified. Florence Williams, author of Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History, in researching the book decided to take it upon herself to send her breastmilk to be tested.

She received some surprising results. Amongst the findings were trace amount of…

5 Easy Steps for Overhauling Your Closet

Every year when the weather starts to warm up I get the itch to overhaul my closet. I'm sure we've all had days when we wake up and stare blankly at our wardrobes wishing we could throw everything out and start over. Since that's not possible for most of us, I've found that simply doing a closet cleanout with the change of seasons can make your clothing choices seem fresh again.

If it seems like a big undertaking, don't sweat it. All you need is a free afternoon, a good Pandora…

Summer Skin Smarts

This weekend marks the traditional kick-off to the summer season.  Many of us will pack up the car and head to the beach or go to the neighborhood pool for its opening weekend.  Bathing suits and flip-flops make their triumphant returns!

What sunscreen will you be bringing?  Do you know what you’re looking for?  There are so many options out there these days; it can be hard to know what’s safest for your skin.

Our article on …

HealthyWomen Hits the Airwaves

When you were watching Dr. Oz or some of your other favorite television shows last week, you may have noticed a public service announcement that looked familiar.

For National Women's Health Week, HealthyWomen had the opportunity to partner with NBC Universal to create two 15-second PSAs that ran in the Washington D.C.…

It’s 3 pm. You’re hungry now, but you ate lunch a few hours ago and are trying to hold out until dinner but your stomach is grumbling. What do you do? Eat the apple you brought with you? Turn to the vending machine? Take some cookies or doughnuts from the table in the break room?

What's for Breakfast?

What's your favorite breakfast? I don't mean a fancy weekend breakfast of eggs Benedict or waffles with whip cream and strawberries. I mean, what's your favorite everyday, rushing-out-the-door breakfast? My favorite weekday breakfast is a poached egg on whole-wheat toast with a piece of fruit or, for variety, scrambled eggs on a corn tortilla with a dollop of salsa. (It may not sound quick, but I have it down to a 4-minute routine—not too much time to devote to starting my day off…

My Sweetie

My granddaughter had a cheerleading competition today.  She is on a cheer squad of approximately 12 girls and her team came in first of six teams in the small category.  Yay!

The event was a large one with literally hundreds and hundreds of girls competing from as young as age 4 to around 12 and the nice thing was that every single girl would leave with a trophy.

When my son first told me she was getting into cheerleading, I wasn't sure what to expect and, honestly, would…

Hard to Keep Up With Health News

When I sat down yesterday morning to have breakfast and read the paper, I was struck by all the health news in our local newspaper. Some of the news was relatively minor; some pretty significant.

The front-page headline was about a study that used genetic information to find that higher levels of HDL (good) cholesterol may not make any difference to heart disease risk. For someone like me who has borderline high LDL (bad) cholesterol but has been told by doctors not to worry because…

Pregnant....I think

It's an unlikely story...

The month started out pretty rough—I did a three-day juice cleanse and was so out of it I ended up spilling a cup of boiling tea on myself and getting second degree burns over a large portion of my belly. Between the pain and the awkwardness of wearing bandages around my…

Learning From Other Women

Without a doubt, other women are the most valuable resource in my life.  My family, friends and co-workers provide more wisdom and help than any book ever could.  That's why I'm excited about our discussion on health challenges.  Every woman in our community has encountered a health challenge in her life.  And all of us are destined to face more in the future.  Information and experience are invaluable tools for…

Welcome to the HealthyWomen Community

Growing up, all I wanted was an older sister.  I had so many questions – from bras to biology projects to boys – and I needed someone to answer them honestly and openly.  While I never got the big sister I wanted (I’m not sure how that would’ve worked anyway), I did find a group of friends that became the next best thing.  Through high school and college, these girls were my confidants and my confessors.

Nowadays, although they are still my best friends, we just don’t talk…

How To Make A Beautiful Life

Love yourself.

Make peace with who you are

And where you are

At this moment in time.

Listen to your heart.

If you can’t hear what it’s saying

In this noisy world,

Make time for yourself.

Enjoy your own company.

Let you mind wander among the stars.

Take chances.

Make mistakes.

Life can be messy

And confusing at times,

But it’s… Continue

Three Easy Hairstyles to Get Through Summer

When the weather gets hot, I find myself wearing my hair up more and more. While the old standby ponytail works for casual occasions, I've found that I often need a more polished look. These three styles will take you from work to brunch to a weekend wedding.

The Sock Bun:

Mastering this style was easy, and it's a definite step up from my normal messy-bun weekend look. Start with a regular, black…

Teen magazine model madness

I just received a press release about 14-year-old Julia Bluhm's petition on asking Seventeen Magazine to promote positive body images to their young readers. Young (and wise-beyond-her-years) Julia wasn't asking a lot: she asked the editors to include one unaltered photo spread a month so girls could see what real beauty looks like, compared to the air-brushed, digitally altered (and half-starved) versions they normally see. The editor-in-chief did not agree to the request but…

Pregnancy Symptoms Without the Pregnancy

Here is another post from early in my pregnancy journey about a phenomenon that I've come to learn happens to a lot of women trying to conceive...

Is it me or do my breasts look fantastic? Did I just feel a twinge in my pelvic area? Is this train ride nauseating? I could have sworn I was…

It's The Little Things

It's been about 445 days since my my family and I decided to change how and what we eat and started our clean eating and exercising. 445 days of no red meats, no fast foods, no sodas, no fried foods, no high calorie, high fat foods.

It feels amazing to have dropped, as a family, a combined 370 pounds!

Being able to wrap my arms all the way around my hubby again is an amazing feeling. Being able to comfortably paint my toenails and shave my legs is something I can easily do… Continue

It's Your Time!

It’s hard to believe that spring is here and that the year is close to being half over. Where did the tim e go?

To me, May represents a time of blossoming, warmth and growth.  And, it is said that the month of May is named after the Roman Goddess Maia, whose name is derived from roots in Latin meaning…
