How A Liposuction Procedure Is Performed

Liposuction uses suction to remove fat from your body. During liposuction, a thin and small but blunt tube will be inserted into tiny cuts made into your skin. Fat cells are suctioned out using these tubes while the doctor will be targeting the area with fat deposits.

After a Liposuction procedure, the area that had been treated will be wrapped well in order to reduce pain, bruising and swelling. Elastic bandage, support hose, tape or special girdle or any other fitting garment can be used according to the body part that has been treated. You may have to use a compression garment and wrap for at least 3 to 4 weeks. You should expect considerable bruising or swelling for 7 to 10 days.

It is possible to move around after the treatment when anesthesia or sedation’s effects have reduced and you can return to normal activities if you are feeling comfortable, but this may take many days. Recovery takes longer when a large area has been treated.

The reason behind a liposuction surgery is reshaping one or even more areas of the body but it is not meant to reduce body weight. A liposuction is meant to treat problematic areas which refused to respond to exercises and diet. The common areas are hips, thighs, waist, and back for men. The surgeon may also work on the upper arms, legs, buttocks, back, abdomen, neck and face.  Liposuction may be done together with another type of cosmetic surgery like a tummy tuck, facelift and breast reduction.

Liposuction can be used for treating some medical conditions like:

  • Abnormal enlargement of male breasts called pseudo-gynecomastia or gynecomastia

  • Problems caused by metabolism of fat within the body like lipodystrophy

  • Too much sweating in the armpit area called axillary hyperhidrosis.

Liposuction cannot be used for treating obesity and it does not get rid of the stretch marks and cellulite.

Liposuction is an effective method for removing fat deposits in a small place. However, if you gain weight after liposuction, fatty bulges which were removed may come back or they will appear in other places. Improvement of body contours will be remarkable after the surgery and the improvement continues for many weeks once the swelling subsides.
